Himalayan Retreat 2015 (September 15 – October 8, 2015): This program includes one week in Tibet and two weeks in Nepal.

Detailed program:

DAY 1 (Sep 15, 2015): Depart Canada for Lhasa, Tibet

DAY 2 (Sep 16, 2015): International travel

DAY 3 (Sep 17, 2015): Fly to Gonggar airport then drive (about 46 km.) to Lhasa, Tibet

Night stop in Kyichu Hotel in Lhasa ( M)

DAY 4 (Sep 18, 2015):

  • Sightseeing: Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple, Barkhor market.

DAY 5 (Sep 19, 2015):

  • Sightseeing: Drepung Monastery, Sera Monastery.

DAY 6 (Sep 20, 2015): Drive to Tsedang

  • Sightseeing: Yumbulakang & Trundruk Monastery

Night stop in Tsedang Hotel in Tsedang ( M).

DAY 7 (Sep 21, 2015): Drive to Gyantse and to Shigatse

  • Visit Khumbum stupa in Gyantse

Night stop in Mansarovar Hotel in Shigatse ( M).

DAY 8 (Sep 22, 2015): Drive to Shegar

  • Visit Tashilimphu Monastery and local market

Night stop in Qomolangma Hotel in Shegar ( M).

DAY 9 (Sep 23, 2015): Drive to Rongbuk and then back to Shegar/Old Tingri

  • In Rongbuk visit Everest Base Camp (from Tibet side) and Rongbuk Monastery

Night stop in Shegar ( M).

DAY 10 (Sep 24, 2015): Drive to Zhangmu then to Kathmandu.

  • Cross border at Kodari from Tibet to Nepal.

DAY 11 (Sep 25, 2015)

FIRST HALF

9:00am            Introduction of the overall program, dos and don’ts, question-answer session for site seeing, white water rafting, wildlife safari and trekking.

9:45am            Introductory session on Nepal’s history, geography, politics, religion, and culture by Mr. Damodar Prasad Gautam, former Nepalese ambassador to USA/Canada.

11:00am          Conservation and tourism by Karna Sakya, Conservationist and hotelier

SECOND HALF

  • Visit Swayambhu Nath (a Buddhist stupa) – World heritage site.
  • Patan Durbar square – World heritage site.
  • Tibetan refugee camp.

DAY 12 (Sep 26, 2015)

FIRST HALF

  • Boudha (Buddhist stupa) – World Heritage site

DAY 13 (Sep 27, 2015): Arrival at Chitwan National Park. Wildlife safari – wildlife viewing (rhinocerous, tiger etc).

DAY 14 (Sep 28, 2015): Full day jungle activities: elephant ride to view the wildlife (rhino, tiger), natural walk, canoeing, bird watching, elephant bathing, and dinner with ethnic Tharu dance.

DAY 15 (Sep 29, 2015): Departure for Pokhara.

  • In Pokhara: Visit lake-side market, and dinner with Nepalese folk dance show.

DAY 16 – 20 (Sep 30 – Oct 4, 2014) Trekking in the Annapurna Region. Full board. Overnight in tea houses.

DAY 16 (Sep 30, 2015): Drive about two hours from Pokhara and start trek from Nayapul to Tikhedhunga (1524m).

DAY 17 (Oct 1, 2015): Trek from Tikhedhunga to Ghorepani (2775 M).

DAY 18 (Oct 2, 2015): Trek from Ghorepani to Poonhill back to Ghorepani and to Tadapani (2540 M).

DAY 19 (Oct 3, 2015): Trek from Tadapani to Ghandruk (4130 M).

DAY 20 (Oct 4, 2015): Trek from Ghandruk to Birethati to Nayapul.

A successful completion of the 2014 Himalayan Field Study – Forestry & Natural Resources program. A special thank you to the 20 participants!! Couldn’t have been possible without you! 

2014 Himalayan Field Study – Forestry & Natural Resources (completed)

Himalayan Field Study 2014, a program of the International Institute of Field Study. designed for foresters and natural resource professionals in collaboration with Canadian Institute Forests and Forests Without Borders, took place from October 16 to November 9, 2014.  The group consisted of 20 participants (10 female and 10 male). The participants were from Ontario, Manitoba, Alberta and British Columbia.

Activities included:

Talk programs on Nepal, community history, geography, politics and culture, forestry, climate change, wildlife and parks management, etc.  Field visits included community forestry activities, interaction with the local forest users’ group, school nursery project funded by Forests Without Borders, Alberta Caucus, etc.

Other activities were white water rafting in Trisuli River, wildlife safari in Chitwan National Park, trekking to Annapurna Base Camp and visits to several world heritage sites like Lumbini, birth place of Lord Buddha, Pasupati temple, Swayambhu, Boudha, Bhaktapur Durbar Square, Kathmandu Durbar Square, etc.

A successful completion of the 2013 Himalayan Retreat – Nepal program. A special thank you to the 21 participants!! You all made it a unforgettable experience!

2014 Himalayan Retreat – Nepal (completed)

Himalayan Retreat 2013, a program of the International Institute of Field Study. took place from October 18 to November 9, 2013.  The group consisted of 21 participants (14 female and 7 male). The participants were from Edmonton, AB; Rocky Mountain House, AB; Hinton, AB; and Pemberton, BC.

Activities included white water rafting in Trisuli River, wildlife safari in Chitwan National Park, trekking to Annapurna Base Camp and visits to several world heritage sites like Lumbini, birth place of Lord Buddha, Pasupati temple. Swayambhu, Boudha, Bhaktapur Durbar Square, Kathmandu Durbar Square, etc.
